The Environmental Control Systems (ECS) Structures Joint Project, developed by faculty of the University of Oregon's Department of Architecture, is discussed. The intent of the project was an educational summary of two technical courses that would establish the relationship of environmental control systems and structures to design. (MLW)

The Total Studio, an ideal pedagogical construct, representing the holistic approach to architectural education is described. The design studio is seen as offering the best opportunity for teaching architecture and it is the only environment in which all aspects of architectural ideas and skills can be learned. (MLW)

A growing awareness of environmental problems and energy scarcity has led architects and engineers to reevaluate their approaches to building design. Three approaches to combining environmental control systems with design in the Department of Architecture at the University of Oregon are discussed. (MLW)

The combination of the creative and technical aspects of research is illustrated by the methodologies used in three research projects: research on building design in relation to climate, environmental physiology, and utilization of natural energy for the heating and cooling of buildings. (JMF)
