Using "Expected Usage" in Space Assessment Projects
Journal of Access Services, v16 n2-3 p116-124 2019
During the spring 2017 semester, the staff at the Boston University School of Theology Library launched a space assessment project aimed at identifying underutilized and inefficiently used sections of the library to better meet the needs of users. Unsatisfied with patron count metrics like "total patron count" and "capacity used", we implemented a statistic titled "expected usage" to quantify utilization of sections with proper context. The library made creative, cost-effective adjustments, and additions to seating in this section of the library, leading to anecdotally heavier usage; gate counts for the spring 2019 semester increased over 15% from spring 2018.
