This article critiques Carlson's historical assessment of Cooperative Extension (appears in same journal issue) and concludes that while Carlson's historical methods are faulty and biased, his criticism may stimulate extension practitioners to be more sensitive about developing meaningful objectives and evaluating progress toward them. A comparison made of personal and impersonal Extension contacts made by alienated farmers revealed that farmers with high alienation scores, as measured by the Srole Scale, avoided personal contacts with Extension personnel. Alienation was not a factor in the use of impersonal contacts. (DM)
