Used data from a national sample of over 800 middle-aged married women to examine influences on retirement plans. Although the majority did not plan to retire at the same time as their husbands, having a retired husband as well as women's own retirement benefits were strong influences. (JAC)

Interviewed middle aged and older persons (N=70) who left their former occupations and took up second careers as artists or craftspersons selling through arts and crafts fairs. Interviews with elderly respondents (N=245) indicated that perceptions of work were influenced by type of job held before retirement. Perceptions of leisure were influenced by forced or voluntary retirement. Generally as people age or retire, their perception of leisure tends to shift away from "freedom" and toward "pleasure."
