In this article, the authors share their experience in taking care of their daughter, Elyse, who was in and out of the hospital when she was a child, battling numerous doctors' visits. Throughout the years, Elyse has taught their family about the importance of the human spirit and that they should appreciate others for who they are, no matter what their abilities may be, which cannot be taught in a classroom. When Elyse turned 19 years old, a Rabbi came to their home to meet their daughter and asked if Elyse has ever had a Bat Mitzvah. They told him that they thought it was impossible and they never pursued the idea. Several days and conversations later, the authors realized that Elyse should have the opportunity that every other Jewish girl has--to demonstrate her Jewish soul by having a Bat Mitzvah.
