Patterson, Blossom H.; And Others – Evaluation Review, 1992
Based on a complex time series evaluation, a 2-year intervention in 40 supermarkets in Washington (DC) and Baltimore (Maryland) indicates that a nutrition education program could produce small but positive changes in consumers' food purchasing behavior. Limitations of the study and its implications for future evaluations are discussed. (SLD)

Weaver, Frances M.; And Others – Evaluation Review, 1993
Effectiveness of a new 72-hour delivery system (USXPRESS) for pharmaceuticals purchased by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) from VA depots was evaluated by comparing 33 test sites with 11 matched sites using a pretest posttest quasiexperimental design. The USXPRESS system reduced inventory, decreased space needs, and satisfied service…

Hannan, Peter J.; Murray, David M. – Evaluation Review, 1996
A Monte Carlo study compared performance of linear and logistic mixed-model analyses of simulated community trials having specific event rates, intraclass correlations, and degrees of freedom. Results indicate that in studies with adequate denominator degrees of freedom, the researcher may use either method of analysis, with certain cautions. (SLD)

Skroban, Stacy B.; Gottfredson, Denise C.; Gottfredson, Gary D. – Evaluation Review, 1999
Implemented a comprehensive, school-based instructional and social-competency-promotion program to prevent problem behavior in a middle school. Evaluation of the five-year program showed that it was ineffective, with no dependable results on youth behavior. Discusses implications of these findings. (SLD)

Whaley, Arthur L. – Evaluation Review, 2006
The lack of support for mental health-related projects by private philanthropy, even among those that express an interest in mental health, is due in large part to the subjectivity of the grant review process. To address this problem, Whaley, Rodriguez, and Alexander developed the Grant Proposal Rating Form (GPRF) to make the grant review process…

Bloom, Howard S. – Evaluation Review, 1987
This article presents lessons learned from an innovative employment and training program for dislocated workers. It provides specific information about program design and serves as a prototype for how social experimentation can be used by state and local governments. (Author/LMO)

Abrahams, Ruby; And Others – Evaluation Review, 1988
A methodology for developing clinical/research assessment tools, training interviewers, and continuously assessing interrater reliability is discussed. Data from a multisite national evaluation of long-term health care programs (i.e., the Social/Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) for elderly clients) are used. Focus is on providing research…

Snow, Robert E.; And Others – Evaluation Review, 1986
Employing a split-half design, this research examines the effects of prior letters, in conjunction with a follow-up telephone survey, on three factors affecting evaluation results: contact rates, response rates, and respondent cooperation. Prior letters did not increase contact, improve cooperation, or decrease refusals. (Author/LMO)

Suen, Hoi K. – Evaluation Review, 1984
A procedure for the analysis of judgmental estimates is derived. It uses a t-distribution concept to derive the relative experience of an expert and uses the derived experience as weight to obtain a weighted mean. Using this method, error in estimation was reduced by an average of one-half. (Author/BW)

Horn, Wade F. – Evaluation Review, 1982
In an overview of single-case methodology, the potential utility of A-B-A and multiple baseline designs for evaluating social programs is discussed. Validity factors and cost-effectiveness are considered, showing that these designs are viable alternative methods where traditional randomized group designs are infeasible. (Author/CM)

Algina, James; Olejnik, Stephen F. – Evaluation Review, 1982
A method is presented for analyzing data collected in a multiple group time-series design. This consists of testing linear hypotheses about the experimental and control group-means. Both a multivariate and a univariate procedure are described. (Author/GK)

Sechrest, Lee; Yeaton, William H. – Evaluation Review, 1982
Methods of assessing effect size and the flows that limit their usefulness are discussed. The various statistical procedures for estimating variance accounted for are based on different statistical models producing sharply differing results. The methods reflect too greatly the particular study characteristics and hence have limited…

Langbein, Laura I. – Evaluation Review, 1994
Recent theories in formal political science are used to show that a common deterrence theory model for estimation of the impact of regulatory program enforcement on intended outcomes is likely to produce biased estimates. The function should include simultaneous equations for compliance and enforcement. (SLD)

Hill, Lawrence J.; Brown, Marilyn A. – Evaluation Review, 1995
A methodology for estimating the cost-effectiveness of coordinated programs from the standpoint of an electric or gas utility is described and illustrated. The discussion focuses on demand-side management programs cofunded by the government and utilities, but it can be applied to other types of cofunded programs. (SLD)

Weinstein, Neil D.; And Others – Evaluation Review, 1992
An experiment with 766 homeowners compared 3 strategies for delivering radon test results to homeowners. Small improvements in consumer satisfaction were found for personalized messages (a telephone call or personal letter) over a form letter. No detectable improvement was found in recall of advice or compliance for any strategy. (SLD)
