Literature that provokes readers to engage in activism is the author's favorite type of writing. For years she has celebrated the tradition of counterculture authors who advocated for a cause, using narratives to educate the world and elicit change. As a culminating project after a year of embracing dialogue and promoting writing for power, she invited students to contribute to an anthology. The primary goals were to allow them to write for power, practice political writing, introduce students to the literary traditions of counterculture authors, and bring the spirit of political consciousness into their community. In this article, the author explains how she established a political writing community by welcoming student opinion, initiating student interest, honoring student voice, and facilitating writing assignments. Additionally, she describes how she used a themed anthology assignment to celebrate their classroom community. In creating this type of environment for their students, educators can bridge in-school and out-of-school contexts and possibly instill a lifelong love of writing for power in students.
