Self-Discovery through Character Connections: Opening up to Gayness in "Angels in America"
Blazar, David
English Journal, v98 n4 p77-84 Mar 2009
In this article, the author describes how he uses performance pedagogy to open students' minds to sexuality and gender issues. The author uses Tony Kushner's "Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes"--an epic play about the AIDS epidemic and its impact on the gay community in the 1980s. Through the possibilities of drama available in "Angels in America," teachers hope to lead students into an understanding of "gayness" as well as its role in their lives and community.
