Shanley, Roger W.
English Journal, v96 n3 p12-14 Jan 2007
Ideally, one's talk segues into ways the precision of crafted phrases or stylized sentences amplifies messages, sharpens concerns, or frames praise. People pursue how words and their selective combinations illuminate and illustrate, persuade and perplex. For many, this intricate puzzle with language is a frolic, simple wordplay. In this article, the author talks about word whimsy and how it generates many forms of creative variations. He also describes some wordplay activities and crafted examples of wordplay that broaden the scope of text discussions about inventive language use.
