Women in or outside of the Canon: Helping High School Students Investigate the Role of Women in "Literature"
Susan Coryat; Colleen Clemens
English Journal, v106 n5 p40-45 2017
Teaching British literature with a traditional curriculum does not offer students exposure to many females at all, either inside or outside of the text. There are female characters within many of the classic texts in the curriculum, but on further examination, we questioned the general picture of womanhood painted by them. So the authors showed students that there are several strong female characters within the British canon, but did any women write? Are there really so few female forces within a sea of strong male writers in the British literary canon? Or does the canon have to re- envisioned to include marginalized voices, specifically in this case the voices of women? While there can be resistance in academia and curriculum committees to reevaluating the canon, the contents of the canon are being questioned as a way to make literature reading lists more representative of the students in our classrooms.
