Toward a Readership of "Real" People: A Case for Authentic Writing Opportunities
Luke Rodesiler; Brian Kelley
English Journal, v106 n6 p22-28 2017
Providing students with the opportunity to generate new content and share it with a wide audience invites students to compose texts with the care and conviction that cannot be duplicated when writing solely for the teacher. This piece documents one teacher's effort to engage 99 eighth graders with an authentic writing opportunity: the collaborative writing and publication of a middle grades novel. The teaching context is provided and proceeded by details about the project, including specifics related to the writing process, working with editors, and marketing the book widely.
