Teaching Real-World Argumentative Writing by Using Playable Cases
Larkin Weyand; Jon Balzotti; Derek L. Hansen
English Journal, v108 n6 p77-87 2019
Educational simulations provide students authentic contexts. These authentic contexts require situated and complex real-world arguments. Such writing scenarios help students recognize why there are often multiple interpretations of evidence, who their audience is, what they want, and what kind of genre is needed. Playable Case Studies help students stay open-minded when investigating the validity of multiple (and contradicting) points of view. Centering writing tasks around multiple points of view requires students to use talk and writing to construct knowledge through inquiry; to dialogue across difference; to anticipate and generate authentic counterarguments; and to use writing as a way to solve problems in authentic situations. These four tenets help students generate authentic arguments to a workplace problem.
