Student-Led Rehearsal Spaces for Collective Meaning in Poetry
Sarah J. Donovan
English Journal, v109 n5 p43-51 2020
After several years of tweaking the protocols for a student- led poetry project, the call for this issue prompted the author to share what she and her students have learned and are still learning about reading poetry. This includes a now- eighth- grade student, Grace. Grace considers herself a "good" student, eager to learn, but she also considers herself quiet and content in the margins of class discussions. When the class began the student- led poetry project, she not only fell in love with poetry, she also found her voice in the community and learned to navigate and enjoy discussion. Throughout this article, to offer a student's perspective on the project, Grace contributes insights on the process, shares excerpts of her work, and relives fragments of discussions.
