Turning Crisis into Opportunity
Calvo, Naomi; Miles, Karen Hawley
Educational Leadership, v69 n4 p19-23 Dec 2011-Jan 2012
When schools face budget cuts, they too often cut seemingly nonessential services in an effort to keep existing structures intact. Calvo and Miles suggest that it might be better to rethink the existing structures and find ways to reallocate staff and instructional time. They examine two school that have taken this approach, focusing their efforts primarily on investing in teaching quality, giving students individual attention, and maximizing the use of time. The strategies the two schools employed did not necessarily require more money, but they did require school leaders to think strategically about how everything they did aligned with the school's overall vision and instructional model.
