AVIDly Seeking Success
Nelson, Jim
Educational Leadership, v64 n7 p72-74 Apr 2007
The AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program helps students, particularly those in the academic middle, prepare for the rigorous courses that can help them get into college. AVID students take an elective class in which they learn organizational and study skills, receive tutoring, and support one another. Teachers in AVID schools learn approaches that can help nontraditional college-prep students to succeed in college-prep classes. Ramona High School in Riverside, California, started its AVID program in 1989. The previous year, fewer than 10 of the 325 graduates of this predominately white upper-middle-class school enrolled in a four-year university. In 2003, about 25 percent of the now ethnically mixed student body enrolled in AVID, and all 98 seniors in the program enrolled in a four-year university.
