Adaptive Leadership for School Equity
Davenport, Gina
Educational Leadership, v79 n6 p22-25 Mar 2022
Adaptive leadership focuses on helping leaders act in a way that encourages others to adapt and embrace change. Adaptive leaders engage in activities that "mobilize," "motivate," "organize," "orient," and "focus the attention of others." Instead of single-handedly trying to solve all problems and challenges, the adaptive leader empowers their team to tackle them. Arundel High School Principal Gina Davenport found the behavioral strategies of adaptive leadership invaluable when implementing equity strategies at her school. In this article, she describes six leadership behaviors that play an important role in the process. These behaviors provided a clear path forward for her in her own school's progress.
