Avoiding the Siren Calls
Wise, Mark; Pandolpho, Beth
Educational Leadership, v77 n1 p22-29 Sep 2019
Familiar and deceptively efficient instructional strategies can be tempting to new teachers who must keep students productively engaged in structured, yet flexible, learning environments. Under the pressure of new responsibilities, novice teachers who are trying to cover the curriculum and manage a classroom of students often end up duplicating the strategies they remember from their student teaching experience, professional development workshops, or their own school days without a sophisticated understanding of how, when, and why to most effectively use them. This article helps education leaders guide new teachers so they don't fall victim to the allure of the Siren calls of efficient, yet sometimes ineffective, instructional strategies.
