Nathan, Linda F.
Educational Leadership, v76 n4 p62-67 Dec 2018
Accomplished arts educator Linda F. Nathan profiles Conservatory Lab Charter School in Boston, a PreK-8 school that specializes in music education. In addition to academic coursework, Conservatory Lab students--many of whom are from low-income, minority families--learn musical instruments, play in ensembles, and compose and conduct music. Nathan says this training helps the students develop "studio habits of mind," including learning a craft, persistence, envisioning and expressing new possibilities, and stretching beyond assumed limitations. "Significantly, these habits not only help them grow as musicians; they also encompass many of the skills that young people need to thrive in today's complex world." The school provides an example for school leaders, she says, of the power of arts in "helping students from diverse gain rich and empowering educational experiences."
