British mathematics educator Tony Cotton suggests that teachers use math instruction to help students--who live in an internationally connected world--ponder international events and the global implications of policies in depth. He describes two math-based activities toward that end. First, teachers might guide learners in examining data connected to the 2016 Brexit referendum, in which citizens of the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union. Students could use this data to calculate how the results might have been quite different if different rules had been applied to that referendum. Second, to gain deeper understanding of the Syrian refugee crisis, students create 100 clay figures and mark a path on the floor showing the route refugees would take as they flee Syria, with borders of nearby countries they might seek refuge in marked at distances in proportion to their real distance from Syria. Students place in each "country" the number of figures that represents what percentage of refugees have actually settled in that country.
