The part played by both interpersonal and mass communication in civic education among older persons was studied. Personal interviews were conducted with 150 survey respondents who were members of local branches of three different organizations for older persons. Education was the variable most highly associated with civic knowledge. (Author)

The study was designed to investigate perception of conflict and outcome across women's roles. A variation of the Thematic Apperception Test was used. Results suggest educated adult women perceive the worker role as the least problematic. (Author)

Data found the overall interest in various types of college courses among the elderly is quite low and age is strongly related to course interest. Results suggest policy makers should be cautious in funding educational programs for the elderly, and should focus programs on individuals under 70 years of age. (Author)

This paper reports on a survey of 424 persons aged 62 and over, who were interviewed in an area probability sample of Wichita, Kansas. A minority of interviewees expressed interest in pursuing higher education, particularly in a broad range of liberal arts courses. Implications for the future are presented. (Author)

Prior research has shown that adults generally remember pictorial stimuli better than printed words. The present study was designed to determine whether memory for these two visual modes might be differentially affected by age. These results indicate that memory processes in the elderly differ quantitatively and not qualitatively. (Author)

Error scores on the MFF (Matching Familiar Figures Test) are a better predictor of test performance than are latencies. Three experiments were performed using unrelated digit materials and prose passages to evaluate whether an auditory or visual presentation of material would be best for an aged population. Subjects, 24 old and 24 young people, were given one learning trial on paired associate lists under four temporal conditions. Recall scores of elderly subjects but not young subjects improved significantly as a function of the registration interval. Results suggest with advanced age more time is required for information processing. (Author)
