This article discusses a pilot project in New Mexico that gives kindergartners--and some 1st graders--20 extra days before the school year begins to learn the ropes and jump into their lessons. The project is called Kindergarten-Plus, the concept is the brainchild of former American Federation of Teachers President Sandra Feldman. According to Feldman, the program could make a big difference in the lives of the poorest children. It will accelerate their early education, socialization, and well-being, and can help make sure that they don't enter 1st grade with as large a disadvantage. This article discusses the impact brought about by the program in New Mexico.
