"Yahak" means "night school" in Korean and its history can be traced back to the 1920s when Korea was under Japanese colonial rule. This paper will focus on the yahak movement during the years from 1960 to the 1990s. Yahak played an important role in raising workers' consciousness during this democratic movement. Yahak started as a movement trying to break the passive and negative images of the oppressed as objects, helping the oppressed to recognise their roles as subjects of history. Since its beginning, yahak tried to adopt their content and roles to the changing situation in its history. Currently, yahaks have both generations of teachers, which sometimes cause problems due to the different aims and understanding of their roles. However, building a new vision and pedagogy based on new practices will be helpful to dissolve such internal tensions. The teachers need dialogue among themselves to resolve the tension. It is this dialogue, both within the courses and among the educators, which is the key to a new conception of yahak, which can address the needs of the Korea of the future.
