New Title Tweets: Using Twitter and Microsoft Excel to Broadcast New Title Lists
Rodzvilla, John
Computers in Libraries, v30 n5 p26-30 Jun 2010
Today's library should be part of the online social networks so it can connect with patrons and inform them of new services and opportunities. But this need to utilize new technology must be balanced against shrinking budgets and increased costs. One way libraries can juggle these demands is to spend more time on creating content, using a mix of free resources and the systems and software already in place. New title lists can be some of the best marketing for a library's collection. Yet most libraries have an ILS that does not have a simple way to broadcast this information beyond the OPAC. An alternative method of delivering new title lists is to use a Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feed. The problem with RSS is that it requires technical and administrative access to the ILS. In this article, the author shares an unofficial project he created that aims to create a way to publicize new titles at the library. The author describes how the project has worked successfully using Twitter and Microsoft Excel.
