MacDonald, Robin W.; Elrod, J. McRee – College and Research Libraries, 1973
A method of developing computer catalogs is proposed which does not require unit card conversion but rather the accumulation of data from operating programs. It is proposed that the bibliographic and finding functions of the catalog be separated, with the latter being the first automated. (8 references) (Author)
Descriptors: Catalogs, Computers, Data Processing, Library Automation

Kantor, Paul B. – College and Research Libraries, 1980
Library collection weeding criteria based upon unequal distribution of demand require that distribution remain stable over time. A mathematical expression is derived that tests that stability. Verification is not inordinately time consuming and is facilitated by the use of automated circulation systems. (Author/RAA)
Descriptors: Library Automation, Library Circulation, Library Collections, Statistical Analysis

Trudell, Libby; Wolper, James – College and Research Libraries, 1978
This survey by the New England Library Information Network as part of research to develop a regional automated ILL system studied lending patterns of different types and sizes of libraries, the flow of ILL among libraries, age of material requested, request fill rates, and turnaround time. (Author/JAB)
Descriptors: Feasibility Studies, Interlibrary Loans, Libraries, Library Automation

Horny, Karen – College and Research Libraries, 1974
Key decisions involved in automating Northwestern University Library's technical processes, the resulting on-line interactive system, and its impact are described. (Author/PF)
Descriptors: Computer Oriented Programs, Computers, Librarians, Library Automation

Johnson, Peggy – College and Research Libraries, 1988
Addresses some problems associated with technological change and examines the nature of data and technology, organizations, and computer-mediated work. Concepts of sociotechnical systems design are related to library automation, and a set of strategies for facilitating technological change is proposed. (29 references) (Author/CLB)
Descriptors: Change Strategies, Information Technology, Innovation, Library Automation

Ellsworth, Dianne – College and Research Libraries, 1971
Computer-based serials listings are a popular method by which libraries make their serial holdings available. Various kinds of union lists are examined to determine the most effective and least costly ways a library can have a list and attendant benefits for its own purpose, and also join in cooperative efforts. (8 references) (Author/NH)
Descriptors: Computer Programs, Library Automation, Library Cooperation, Library Services

Burns, Robert W., Jr. – College and Research Libraries, 1971
Directed toward the novice in systems work, it is the purpose of this article to generalize at a very elementary level a methodology or approach which can be used in conducting a systems study. (34 references) (Author/NH)
Descriptors: Automation, Decision Making, Libraries, Library Automation

Schure, Alexander – College and Research Libraries, 1975
Libraries must exploit various new technologies to control the information explosion. (Author)
Descriptors: College Libraries, Computers, Information Utilization, Librarians

Bailey, Stephen K. – College and Research Libraries, 1978
The future of college and research libraries is discussed in the context of the changing role of academic librarians, the assistance technology may give to libraries, the political activity required to achieve government aid for libraries, and the future of higher education. (Author/AWP)
Descriptors: College Libraries, Futures (of Society), Higher Education, Librarians

Musman, Klaus – College and Research Libraries, 1978
Under the influence of socio-technical theory, recent job satisfaction research has focused upon the areas of (1) the work itself, (2) the individual versus the organization, and (3) job design. This paper focuses on these three areas and explores some of the problems in job design for library employees. (Author/AWP)
Descriptors: Job Development, Job Satisfaction, Librarians, Libraries

Segesta, Jim; Hersberger, Rod – College and Research Libraries, 1987
Provides a retrospective review of a book published in 1962, "Advanced Data Processing in Libraries," by Schultheiss, Culbertson, and Heiliger, which was one of the first books to present a systematic view of library computerization. This review attempts to consider how accurate that view was. (Author/CLB)
Descriptors: Computers, Cost Effectiveness, Futures (of Society), History

Espley, John; Metz, Paul – College and Research Libraries, 1980
Findings of a longitudinal study indicate high success rates for OCLC as a source of cataloging copy. They further suggest that holding patterns for many types of materials may be unnecessary. (Author/RAA)
Descriptors: Bibliographies, Cataloging, Databases, Library Automation

Tuttle, Helen W. – College and Research Libraries, 1976
Academic and research libraries have tended to dominate change and codification in this area of library work, as much in 1876 as in 1976. (Author)
Descriptors: Cataloging, Classification, College Libraries, Library Acquisition

Kilgour, Frederick G. – College and Research Libraries, 1973
The recent experiences of the Ohio College Library Center's computer-based cataloging system illustrate how the computer can facilitate interlibrary cooperation. The paper also presents some of the difficult organizational problems which must be coped with in developing a computer-based cooperative system. (6 references) (Author/DH)
Descriptors: Cataloging, Computer Science, Cooperatives, Library Automation

Mason, Ellsworth – College and Research Libraries, 1971
The trend toward extensive computerization of the processes of research libraries is indicated as excessive, uncritical and inefficient. (JN)
