Changes in the Tradecraft of Cheating: Technological Advances in Academic Dishonesty

College Teaching, v70 n3 p309-318 2022
Academic dishonesty is pervasive among college students throughout the country. Current research suggests that more than half of students report engaging in cheating behavior while in college. While traditional forms of cheating behavior remain, technology has ushered in new opportunities making cheating more accessible by more students and harder to detect, due in part, to the use of personal electronic devices. The present research, drawing on a large sample of students from a Midwestern university, examines quantitative and qualitative differences in cheating behavior across several demographics and its association with several correlates including stress and social media usage. Results of the study suggest a notable and significant gendered difference in cheating behavior. Female college students, while significantly more likely to hold more negative views of cheating behavior than males, are also significantly more likely to engage in cheating using technology. Females also score higher on measures of stress and social media usage than their male counterparts, highlighting the need and potential utility in a gendered approach when addressing collegiate cheating behavior.
