The Lost Island of English Studies: Globalization, Market Logic, and the Rhetorical Work of Department Web Sites
Stroupe, Craig
College English, v67 n6 p610 Jul 2005
Three ways that English department Web sites express, lost-island rhetoric, the rhetorical tropes on these sites, which express an ironic, dialogical tension between being lost and being found in the global economy is discussed. Lost-island rhetoric expresses the profession's own contradictory impulses considering the network, the desire to ingratiate itself to commercial culture by linking itself and its practices to the Web, and the need to assert a sense of distance.
