Examines the correlation between high school foreign language study and success in college. Found that those who studied Latin, French, German, or Spanish in high school may be expected to perform better academically in college than students of equal academic ability who do not take a foreign language. Describes what the field of classics covers and how it developed before the 20th century. Examines how the subject matter of classics has expanded and how methods of teaching and research have changed. Suggests ways to integrate the study of the classics with the cultural life of the community. (SED)

The second in a series of articles. Methodological reports and studies on the value of Latin in the high school curriculum are reviewed to provide teachers with "hard, scientific" data for presenting the case for Latin before school boards, parents and students. A dozen studies are discussed. (KM)
