What Graduate Students Want to Know about Community Colleges, Part 2
Jenkins, Rob
Chronicle of Higher Education, May 2012
Facing a cutthroat academic job market, many doctoral students are now willing to explore the possibility of a community-college career. And they have many questions. In Part 1 of this series, the author focused on the hiring process at two-year colleges and answered some common questions like "Do I have to have a Ph.D. to teach in that sector?" In this article, the author answers other questions that graduate students ask him about what it's like to actually work at one of the colleges: (1) "What's the typical workload?"; (2) "What about my research?"; (3) "What does it take to get tenure?"; (4) "What do community colleges pay?"; (5) "Can I move up from a community college to a four-year institution?"; and (6) "What's it like working at a community college?"
