In this article, the author shares his experience while doing research in Beersheba, Israel. His experience has taught him some unexpected lessons. One lesson he learned, when venturing to another floor within the university while the sirens go off, is to locate the nearest bomb shelter (each floor of the building has its own shelter.) One should also set aside some extra time to master the escape language since the signs are not written in English characters. As he attempts to maintain a sense of detachment and objectivity amid periodic random shelling, the author adopts a tongue-in-cheek attitude, noting a lack of instruction in rocket-shelter etiquette. What do you do if you are naked in the bathroom when the siren is sounded? Or in the process of relieving yourself? How dressed are you expected to be before joining your neighbors in the cramped space of the shelter? These are some of the banalities you don't think about until the sirens begin to wail.
