People's ambivalence about the role that group membership plays in the public sphere is unfolding before everyone's eyes in the 2008 presidential campaign. While a "New York Times"/CBS News poll said that 69 percent of Americans believe that the U.S. is ready for a black president, a lot of Americans still believe that society still treats blacks and whites unequally. Notably, some characteristics of American social life, including perceptions of the odds, are virtually unchanged from 10 years ago--even as the election season has provided powerful stories of remarkable individuals surpassing glass ceilings of age, race, and gender. In this article, the author discusses how many Americans still run from any possibility of improving the odds for some groups that might disadvantage other individuals. He also explains how group identity can motivate, mobilize, and energize individuals in the best possible ways. As such, all Americans should acknowledge other groups and not sweep them under a rug in the name of individualism. The country needs a "no group left behind" campaign now.
