Both Hispanics and Asian-Americans are misunderstood by college officials, and too little attention has been focused on community colleges, the institutions that serve the most minority students. The Advanced Placement Program has become a "program of academic opportunity" for students in high schools that enroll large numbers of minority groups. These schools are raising the expectations of minority students and helping them achieve higher goals, and they are bringing them into professional and graduate schools. (MLW)

In the fall of 1986, almost 18 percent of the 12.5 million students enrolled in colleges were non-Whites, with the largest increases among Asians and Hispanics. In 10 years, the number of minority students has increased by one-third overall. (MSE)

Resentment toward Asians on college campuses springs from many sources, including trade-war concerns, language barriers, the "model-minority" myth, and other stereotypes. Advocacy groups and student organizations are attempting to combat bias with activism. (MSE)
