With a predominantly Black student body, Grambling State University has prevailed against the nationwide trend of low minority passing rates on teacher certification tests. A study of test results of would-be teachers in 19 states documented the failure of nearly 38,000 members of minority groups. Critics say testing requirements are limiting the racial and cultural makeup of the nation's teaching force at a time of growing ethnic and racial diversity in public schools. (MLW)

Two-hundred Hispanic faculty members, administrators, and students from the nine University of California campuses met to plan strategies for increasing their presence throughout the university. One catalyst for the meeting was frustration because no Hispanics were considered for the four new chancellorships named recently. (MLW)

The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, representing schools with a 25% Hispanic enrollment, plans to press for the simplification of student financial aid forms and lay the groundwork for legislation that would set aside funds for Hispanic colleges similar to money for Black colleges.
