Children who have been traumatized tug at the souls of early childhood teachers who have big hearts and open arms. Whether children have been witnesses to a disaster, such as Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath, or have experienced trauma through direct assault, such as abuse, they need people who are willing and able to take extra care and determination in ushering them though the process of healing. However, working closely with a child who has experienced a trauma exposes teachers and caregivers to that same trauma. The cumulative effect after years of working with abused children may manifest as burnout, traumatization, or secondary trauma. In this article, the author presents the results of a study that examined how trauma affects child-teacher attachment. (Contains 2 figures.)
