Australia's indigenous population is made up of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, who each have distinctly different cultures. The former can be found in cities and towns and cross the vast reaches of rural and remote Australia; the latter inhabit the coastal islands off the northeast coast and adjacent mainland areas. According to the 2001 census, indigenes made up 2.2 percent of the Australian population (410,000 in a total population of 19 million) (Reynolds, 2005). A five-month sabbatical spent in Australia provided the author with the opportunity to return "home" and the liberty to spend time investigating a long-term interest--Aboriginal education. As a Visiting Scholar at the University of Newcastle, New South Wales, the author was able to devote time to interviewing teachers, administrators, and university faculty, reading the available research literature and visiting predominantly Aboriginal schools. What follows is the fruit of these investigations.
