Caring for the Hearts and Souls of Young Children: Acknowledging Spiritual Intelligence
Harris, Kathleen I.
Childhood Education, v98 n1 p22-31 2022
From expressing wonder and awe about the natural world to contemplating the significance of life to conveying compassion and expressing concern for others, the spiritual child has much to offer the world. However, the topic of spirituality is rarely addressed in early childhood or child development textbooks. Spirituality can be defined in many ways. Some definitions focus on self-awareness as it affects relationships. Others connect spirituality with joy, beauty, kindness, and the importance of nature. Spirituality is a recognition of something beyond what we can be seen. It prompts one to wonder and ask the questions that can inspire epiphanies and teachable moments. From this understanding of spirituality come opportunities to consider the spiritual development of young children. This article discusses how cultivating young children's immense capacity for curiosity and wonder and helping them understand the connectedness of the world supports their growth as giving and empathic individuals.
