Education Innovation Clusters: Supporting Transformative Teaching and Learning
Fuller, Cricket
Childhood Education, v96 n1 p34-47 2020
In the United States, the K-12 education sector too often exists in silos, separated from meaningful connections with community and innovation. But in Tucson, Pittsburgh, and other regions around the country, communities are working to break down those walls. They are building ecosystems that bring together educators, researchers, funders, edtech entrepreneurs, policymakers, industry, community organizations, and other education stakeholders to support transformative teaching and learning in their regions--both in and out of school. These partners collaborate outside the traditional silos of sector and institution in order to design, implement, and scale promising learning tools, programs, and practices. These local networks have been dubbed Innovation Clusters (EdClusters). This article begins with a brief history of the education Innovation Clusters model. It then profiles different types of EdClusters established in Tuscon, Pittsburgh, rural southeastern Kentucky, and Kansas City.
