Thompson, J. Victor – Canadian Journal on Aging, 1989
A sample of 334 people aged 56 and older living in British Columbia were interviewed about their supportive social network. Four supportive roles were investigated: caretaker, helper, confident, and advisor. The research supports earlier findings about the vulnerability of widows over 74 years old. They are most in need of networks. (Author/JOW)

Guberman, Nancy; Maheu, Pierre – Canadian Journal on Aging, 1999
The process that allows family caregivers to combine employment and elder care was examined in interviews with 25 caregivers. The effects of elder care on employment are the result of the degree to which caregivers manage to maintain balance between different life spheres: personal and social life, family life, caregiving, and employment. (53…

Berger, Ellie D.; Denton, Margaret A. – Canadian Journal on Aging, 2004
In order to gain a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between women's life course work patterns and their financial planning for later life, we examined data from semi-structured interviews with retired women (n = 28) aged 59 to 92. The majority of women disrupted their careers at some point in time, for an average of 14 years, primarily…

Rozanova, Julia; Northcott, Herbert C.; McDaniel, Susan A. – Canadian Journal on Aging, 2006
In this article, we examine how seniors are portrayed in the "Globe and Mail." Thirty articles published in 2004 were selected and thematically analysed. Seniors were discussed in six different contexts, including family, work/retirement, community networks, scientific studies of population, social and health care policy, and social attitudes to…

McDonald, Lynn; Robb, A. Leslie – Canadian Journal on Aging, 2004
Although progress has been made over the last 20 years, the burden of a low income in old age is still carried by unattached women. Few researchers, however, have examined exactly where the burden of poverty falls within the category of unattached older women or what the nature of this poverty is. Like any other group of older Canadians,…

Aronson, Jane – Canadian Journal on Aging, 1990
Interviews with 14 middle-class women aged 59-85 uncovered contradictions between their need for support and security and desire to be independent and self-sufficient. Low expectations of public services and a sense of marginality in their families exacerbated the conflict. Ways to help elderly women shape supportive environments were proposed.…

MacRae, Hazel – Canadian Journal on Aging, 1990
The assumption of a study was that self rather than role forms the link between individuals and society. Data obtained through participant observation and 142 interviews with elderly women revealed that their identity is deeply embedded within their informal involvements and social network ties. (SK)

Clarke, Laura Hurd – Canadian Journal on Aging, 2006
Rates of sexual activity have been found to decline over the life course, as individuals experience marital transitions and the loss of partners, health problems, and decreased sexual interest. This article compares and contrasts earlier and later-life sexual experiences and examines the changing meanings that older women ascribe to sexuality over…

Kerr, Robert; Teaffe, Martha S. – Canadian Journal on Aging, 1991
Fourteen undergraduate women (mean age 20) and 14 elderly women (mean age 70) executed a task requiring them to align a pointer with a target light in 5 positions. Elderly subjects had slower reaction and movement times. However, they were as capable as the younger women of correcting unanticipated movement errors. (SK)

Tranmer, J. E.; Croxford, R.; Coyte, P. C. – Canadian Journal on Aging, 2003
To understand the impact of ongoing reform of mental health and dementia care in Ontario, an examination of prevalence and health services utilization rates is needed. However, there exists a gap in current prevalence and health services research specific to dementia care in Ontario. The objective of this study was to address these concerns using…

Grant, Peter R.; Rice, Bruce – Canadian Journal on Aging, 1983
A mail-out survey was used to assess the transportation needs of seniors living in relatively remote rural areas of Saskatchewan. Two types of transportation needs were identified: the need to make local trips at least once a week and the need for transportation to a district center at least once a month. (Author/CT)

Rosenthal, Carolyn J.; Hayward, Lynda; Martin-Matthews, Anne; Denton, Margaret A. – Canadian Journal on Aging, 2004
While concern has been expressed for some time about the impact of rising female employment on informal help to older adults, few studies have directly compared employed and not-employed women and only rarely has research utilized national, population-based samples. This article examines whether paid employment reduces the provision and/or the…
