Report: Immersion French at Meriden Junior School
Esposito, Marie-Josee
Babel, v41 n2 p36-37 Dec 2006
In this article, the author describes the French immersion program at Meriden Junior School, an Anglican school for girls from pre-Kindergarten to Year 12 in Sydney. Four teachers (one of whom is the coordinator) and three assistants are involved in the program. They include six French native speakers and one non-French-born teacher who speaks near-native French. In a multicultural society such as Sydney's, Meriden School recognises the importance of learning languages and being open to other cultures. Half the students in Year 7 at present come from a cultural and linguistic background that is non-Anglo-Saxon. With this in mind, the school encourages bilingual students and their families to share their views on how to maintain bilingualism at home and at school.
