Self-Portraits and Popular Culture
McCutcheon, Heather
Arts & Activities, v151 n3 p18, 34 Apr 2012
In this article, the author describes how her studio art students created their Pop art-style self-portraits. Students were each given a printout of a black-and-white picture of themselves that the author had taken with her digital camera. With this picture, students took tracing paper and traced a basic outline of their face, hair, and neck. They were to transfer their portraits onto "good paper" at least three times. Once done, students designed their background. Students were given a choice of using either neon paint or markers. Since these are considered Pop-art portraits, they needed to "pop" with color. After painting and coloring, some students went back into their portraits to trace the black lines again with the black marker to make things stand out better.
