Imagination and Transformation: Performing a Universal Narrative Theme
Mackenzie, Kerry Burke
Art Education, v65 n3 p12-16 May 2012
The second semester of the new art education studio art course that the author teaches, which explores the possibilities of literacy learning through the visual arts, yielded an unexpected outcome. The author worked together with the art department chair to establish the fundamental criteria for this course and write the syllabus. The course is now required for graduate art education students before beginning student teaching. "Literacy and Learning through the Visual Arts" was designed to give the art teacher a basic working knowledge of visual literacy within the visual arts, as well as experience incorporating language literacy skills--reading, writing, and listening--into the artmaking process. In the course, they combined the two content areas, which the author refers to as "visual-lingual literacy," and inquired how artmaking is enriched by the marriage. In this article, the author reflects on an unexpected outcome that emerged while students were performing a universal narrative with body puppets.
