Art as social practice encourages active, critical reflections on relevant issues among real people in locally situated engagements and with unpredictable outcomes. This instructional resource focuses on art as social practice that puts critical value on processes of engagement over the creation of art products by exploring contemporary artists Harrell Fletcher and Pepon Osorio as exemplars. Harrell Fletcher's installation project "The American War" and Pepon Osorio's "Badge of Honor" facilitate human to human interactions through discourse and social negotiations of meaning by allowing learning experiences to unfold between individuals who might not otherwise have an opportunity to work together to publicly address concerns about difficult issues. Through exploration of the social practice-based artwork of Harrell Fletcher and Pepon Osorio, students will understand that art can engage communities in discourse that is important and relevant to contemporary life.
