For more than 60 years, Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson has created art that documents her own experiences and the stories handed down to her from her family. She captures the character of the neighborhoods where she has lived and the places she has visited, and she chronicles the accounts of people and events that have changed the course of history. Aminah, as she prefers to be called, has developed a distinct artistic vocabulary with materials that range from those traditionally used by artists to found and natural objects. Aminah's self-proclaimed goal is embedded in the African concept of "Sankofa," the obligation to learn from the past in order to live in the present and move forward into the future. This instructional resource invites students to enter Aminah's world, to "hear" and see her stories and to "use" her work to generate dialogue about issues of community, race, gender, and class that is advocated by educators who call for using diverse art to stimulate social responsibility in their students. Instructional activities that provide ideas for engaging students in researching the past, documenting it, and "passing it on" by creating a community chair, unwritten love letters, and accordion books are presented.
