The Checklist Traveler: Teaching Online during the Pandemic
Wright, Jason
Art Education, v75 n6 p22-24 2022
In this article, Jason Wright begins by describing the "checklist traveler"--a traveler that has a checklist for every city they travel to and once done, they move on. This type of traveler would see the sites they were "supposed to see" and were on a tight schedule. The famous relics, monuments, statues, cathedrals, sweeping vistas, and architectural marvels of cities "needed to be seen," often at breakneck speeds, without emotion or appreciation. In contrast, for Wright the pleasure of traveling was rooted in continuous improvisation. He often felt disappointed when days would go entirely according to plan. In the remainder of the article, Wright compares the checklist traveler to his experience teaching art online the past 2 years. He "taught to his screen," critiquing submitted work with little or no immediate response. Online forums, developed for interstudent questions, were used sparingly. Wright did his best to serve the students, but as a teacher, he felt as though he was a checklist traveler. His students were checklist travelers.
