Explorations of Place: Artists and Artworks of Southwest Louisiana
Sanders-Bustle, Lynn; Williams, Rebecca
Art Education, v66 n2 p25-32 Mar 2013
Place is defined by Lippard (1997) as "temporal and spatial, personal and political. A layered location replete with human histories and memories, place has width as well as depth. It is about connections, what surrounds it, what formed it, what happened there, and what will happen there" (p. 7). Thus exploring place extends possibilities for better understanding society. Gradle (2007) suggests that "if we are to understand an increasingly turbulent and mobile society in which many experience a loss of identity, boundary conflicts that are both long lasting and complex, and symbolic attachments to places both remembered and imagined, a discussion of place is essential'' (p. 392). Consequently, this Instructional Resource guides students through an exploration of place by engaging in the processes of art criticism and artmaking to open up possible interpretations and foster greater understandings of the way individuals develop deep connections to places and the way these connections shape the defining aspects of those places.
