The Lowenfeld Award was established in 1960 by friends and former students of Viktor Lowenfeld (widely acknowledged as the most influential art educator of the 20th century) to honor an NAEA member who has made significant contributions to the field of art education through the years. This article reports on the 2012 recipient, Bernard Young, Professor of Art Education and Director of Graduate Studies at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. In this article, Young relates his experiences and formal development in art education. He describes his relationship with to the legacy and scholarship of Viktor Lowenfeld and how his research has stood on the shoulders of three of his former students.
