DiMercurio, C. – American School and University, 1981
This first article in a series about cooling classrooms by ventilation explains that energy consumption for one day of refrigeration cooling is equal to energy use for 35 days of ventilation cooling. Schools using only refrigeration cooling are passing up energy savings that could be provided by ventilation cooling. (Author/MLF)
Descriptors: Air Conditioning Equipment, Climate Control, Cost Effectiveness, Elementary Secondary Education
Estes, R. C. – American School and University, 1979
A new high school shifts an electrical demand charge load by using an icemaker during nonoperating hours to provide chilled water for producing cool air. A review resulted in a computer being placed in the design to control the electrical demand charge load in addition to spreading the load. (Author/MLF)
Descriptors: Air Conditioning Equipment, Computer Science, Cost Effectiveness, Educational Facilities Design
Santamaria, Joseph W. – American School and University, 1977
While tripling the campus size of Alvin Community College in Texas, architects and engineers cut back on nonessential lighting, recaptured waste heat, insulated everything possible, and let energy considerations dictate the size and shape of the building. (Author/MLF)

American School and University, 1980
The Department of Civil and Mineral Engineering at the University of Minnesota is constructing a building that will be 95 percent underground. (Author/MLF)
Descriptors: Air Conditioning, Architectural Research, Building Innovation, Demonstration Programs
Woodbury, Kenneth B., Jr. – American School and University, 1980
A checklist to use in preparing an energy conservation master plan. (MLF)
Descriptors: Air Conditioning, Building Operation, Elementary Secondary Education, Energy
DiMercurio, C. – American School and University, 1981
This second article in a series about cooling classrooms by ventilation describes the equipment available to help save energy and money. The first article appeared in the July 1981 issue. (Author/MLF)
Descriptors: Air Conditioning Equipment, Climate Control, Cost Effectiveness, Elementary Secondary Education
American School and University, 1980
Solar energy heats and cools the newest building on the campus of Columbus Technical Institute in Ohio. A solar demonstration project grant from the Department of Energy covered about 77 percent of the solar cost. (Author/MLF)
Descriptors: Air Conditioning Equipment, Demonstration Programs, Educational Facilities Design, Federal Aid
American School and University, 1976
A national survey inquired whether school districts and colleges were involved in construction projects. Institutions responding in the affirmative were asked for more detailed information on costs, facilities, and fuel usage. (Author/MLF)
Descriptors: Air Conditioning, Carpeting, Comparative Analysis, Construction Costs
9th Annual Report on Educational Construction. Focus on the 'Three Rs': Repair, Refurbish, Renovate.
Abramson, Paul – American School and University, 1983
Less than 57 percent of the more than $9.6 million put into educational construction completed in 1982 went into new structures; additions and modernizations received the remainder. Responses from 30 percent of all school districts and 28 percent of all colleges are projected for 10 geographical regions. (MLF)

Abramson, Paul – American School and University, 1982
Construction spending increases in 1981 did not keep pace with inflation. The Sun Belt states continued to build, but in the Northeast, modernization was used to combat the increasing cost of fuel. Responses from 25 percent of all school districts and 30 percent of all colleges are projected. (Author/MLF)
Descriptors: Air Conditioning, Carpeting, Construction Costs, Construction Programs
Abramson, Paul – American School and University, 1981
Total school construction in 1980 fell from 1979, and all levels are predicting somewhat less construction over the next three years. Information provided by 2,038 school districts and 1,527 colleges is analyzed. (Author/MLF)
Descriptors: Air Conditioning, Birth Rate, Carpeting, Construction Costs
