Excess lead concentration (resulting primarily from vehicular emissions) in Baltimore's inner city soils probably has a bearing on that city's child lead poisoning problem. Soil lead concentrations were lower outside the inner city. (GC)

Studies alcohol, cigarette, and marijuana use by fourth graders in Washington, DC (n=4,675 in 1988-89 and n=4,678 in 1990-91). Lifetime prevalence of self-reported alcohol use, alcohol use without parental knowledge, and smoking more than a puff of a cigarette declined, although marijuana use and cigarette experimentation did not decline. Compares the level of knowledge about human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission and risk behavior of 1,057 foreign-born and 1,963 U.S.-born high school and middle school students in Boston (Massachusetts). Results suggest that Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome education should be taught to immigrant students in their native languages. (SLD)
