Among 60 day care centers (DCC) surveyed, characteristics of centers with high rates of disease among children included (1) the presence of young, nonbowel trained children, (2) staff who both regularly diapered infants and prepared food, (3) for-profit management, and (4) DCC whose only guidelines were provided by the state.
