We're Giving Businesses a Choice
Way, David
Adults Learning, v19 n4 p18-19 Dec 2007
In this article, the author reviews Train to Gain's service and exposes a number of myths about the programme. Since its initial national roll out in September 2006 people have seen encouraging take up, with more than 53,000 employers and 230,000 learners benefiting from Train to Gain. A key element of Train to Gain is the skills brokerage service, which helps businesses find the training and other skills support they need to succeed. A dedicated skills broker analyses individual business needs and works with employers to help them plan a tailored training programme. As each business is unique, skills brokers do not have a stock solution. Instead they offer their expert advice and signposting to a whole range of training and other skills solutions to meet their business needs. In its first year, there was emphasis on level 2 training. However, as Train to Gain moves into its second year, it is looking at ways to broaden out the training employers are able to access through the service. It has been piloting the provision of part-funded level 3 training in three UK regions and is now rolling this out nationally. Another initiative that clearly demonstrates the reach of Train to Gain is the Leadership and Management pilot. Through Train to Gain, people from the Learning and Skills Council are offering grant support to small and medium-sized enterprises (20-250 employees) for leadership and management training, encompassing anything from coaching and mentoring through to analysing business and HR needs. They have found that engaging with owner managers and meeting their training needs is often the first step to instilling a culture of training throughout business, and 73 percent of employers participating in Leadership and Management training have increased the investment made in training and skills for their workforce, directly benefiting providers. Another example of putting employers in control while helping them access Train to Gain is the launch of the Skills Pledge. Employers who demonstrate their commitment to training their employees are given access to a dedicated skills broker who will work with them to develop an organisational training plan and help them to find the most effective way of delivering on that plan.
