Faculty-in-residence programs aim to strengthen the intellectual climate in residential facilities. This article presents the author's reflections on nine years of living in a residence hall as a Faculty-In-Residence (FIR) at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). The author shares an insider's observations on the role he played as a FIR. The author first describes the role of a FIR and offers some ways that a FIR might go about meeting academic objectives. Next, he describes four key observations about residential education and the work of student affairs professionals in this important area of student life. Then, he offers some observations relating to faculty engagement in residential education. The author concludes by proposing an alternative to involve as many faculty as often as is reasonably possible in a variety of residential education activities for campuses that cannot afford to adopt a faculty-in-residence program.
